Here’s a simple Sri Lankan beef biryani recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1 kg beef, cut into cubes
  • 2 cups basmati rice, soaked for 30 minutes
  • 3 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 3 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1/2 cup yogurt
  • 1/4 cup ghee
  • 1/4 cup oil
  • 2 tablespoons ginger-garlic paste
  • 2 teaspoons biryani masala
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 4-5 green chilies, chopped
  • Handful of mint leaves, chopped
  • Handful of coriander leaves, chopped
  • Salt to taste
  • Water as needed

Instructions:

  1. Heat oil and ghee in a large pot. Sauté sliced onions until golden brown. Remove half for later use.
  2. Add ginger-garlic paste to the remaining onions in the pot and sauté until the raw smell disappears.
  3. Add beef cubes and brown them. Then, add chopped tomatoes, biryani masala, chili powder, turmeric powder, cumin powder, and coriander powder. Cook until the tomatoes are soft.
  4. Mix in yogurt, green chilies, mint leaves, coriander leaves, and salt. Cook until the beef is tender and the mixture thickens.
  5. In a separate pot, cook soaked basmati rice until it’s 70% done. Drain the water.
  6. Layer the partially cooked rice over the beef mixture. Sprinkle the reserved sautéed onions on top.
  7. Drizzle a little ghee over the rice. Cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid or aluminum foil.
  8. Cook on low heat for 20-25 minutes or until the rice is fully cooked and aromatic.
  9. Gently fluff the biryani with a fork, mixing the rice and beef layers.
  10. Serve hot, garnished with additional mint and coriander leaves. Enjoy your Sri Lankan beef biryani!

Note: Adjust spice levels according to your preference.
