Srilankan beef biryani recipe
Here’s a simple Sri Lankan beef biryani recipe:
Ingredients:
- 1 kg beef, cut into cubes
- 2 cups basmati rice, soaked for 30 minutes
- 3 large onions, thinly sliced
- 3 tomatoes, chopped
- 1/2 cup yogurt
- 1/4 cup ghee
- 1/4 cup oil
- 2 tablespoons ginger-garlic paste
- 2 teaspoons biryani masala
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin powder
- 1 teaspoon coriander powder
- 4-5 green chilies, chopped
- Handful of mint leaves, chopped
- Handful of coriander leaves, chopped
- Salt to taste
- Water as needed
Instructions:
- Heat oil and ghee in a large pot. Sauté sliced onions until golden brown. Remove half for later use.
- Add ginger-garlic paste to the remaining onions in the pot and sauté until the raw smell disappears.
- Add beef cubes and brown them. Then, add chopped tomatoes, biryani masala, chili powder, turmeric powder, cumin powder, and coriander powder. Cook until the tomatoes are soft.
- Mix in yogurt, green chilies, mint leaves, coriander leaves, and salt. Cook until the beef is tender and the mixture thickens.
- In a separate pot, cook soaked basmati rice until it’s 70% done. Drain the water.
- Layer the partially cooked rice over the beef mixture. Sprinkle the reserved sautéed onions on top.
- Drizzle a little ghee over the rice. Cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid or aluminum foil.
- Cook on low heat for 20-25 minutes or until the rice is fully cooked and aromatic.
- Gently fluff the biryani with a fork, mixing the rice and beef layers.
- Serve hot, garnished with additional mint and coriander leaves. Enjoy your Sri Lankan beef biryani!
